The major South Shore route was due to open at the end of March after being closed off for safety reasons, but contractors are 'working hard to get it ready for February 12 before half-term', a spokesman said.

They described the announcement as 'good news'.

The bridge, which crossed the Blackpool South railway line, was shut for urgent repairs on Wednesday, July 26 last year, after inspections revealed serious levels of corrosion in steel parts of the concrete structure.

It sparked fears over the impact on businesses and traffic.
