Five children and three adults were taken to hospital when two cars collided in a horror smash on Tuesday afternoon.

The 81-year-old driver of a Citroen romahome had to be freed from his vehicle by the fire service when he was in collision with a Ford Galaxy on West Drive, Cleveleys, at 3.45pm.

He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with serious injuries and the seven occupants of the Ford - five children and two adults - were treated at Blackpool Victoria Hospital for minor injuries.

Police are now appealing for information to help with their investigation after the road was closed for three hours.

Sgt James Power from the Road Policing Unit said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and contact the police.

“The 81-year-old man is in a serious condition at the Royal Preston Hospital and an investigation is underway to establish exactly what happened.

“If anyone has any information then I would ask them to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
