The bricks began raining down from the crumbling gable end of a three-storey building in Bond Street, near the junction with Rawcliffe Street, at 2am.

The building is home to a Mini Market - opposite the Trim-It fabric shop - with flats in the two floors above.

The pebble dash rendering on the gable end of the upper floors has partially collapsed, sending loose bricks crashing onto the roof of an empty unit next door.

Rubble and loose bricks can also be seen strewn across the pavement and road below.

The road is expected to remain closed between Dean Street and Rawcliffe Street until later this afternoon.

A police spokesman said: "It looks like we were made aware of the collapse at around 2am today. At this stage it appears the road is still closed."
