Blackpool Transport says the wires will still be live in order to enable staff to carry out any maintenance work which is necessary.

A spokesperson said: “Following on from this from Sunday onwards the power to the overhead wires will still be turned on.

“This is a risk to life if somebody was to attempt to steal or touch the overhead wires on the assumption that because trams aren’t running, the power will be off too.

“Leaving the power on allows us to carry on with any maintenance duties and test the system following work carried out.

“There will also be routine refresher drives for some team members to ensure they remain within competency.”

The last trams will run on Saturday night before the service is suspended, with those needing essential travel able to use the number one bus service which operates along the seafront instead.
