Volunteers are inviting prospective lifeboat shore crew and fund-raisers to find out what it takes to be part of a life saving team.

The RNLI is holding a volunteer recruitment day in Fleetwood in a bid to attract new helpers.

Operational volunteers are needed to help launch the Lifeboat.

Other help is required to help in the Lifeboat station shop, conduct visits and take part in fund-raising.

RNLI community fundraising manager Chloe Shore said: “Up to 95 per cent of RNLI people are volunteers and there is a role to suit just about everyone.

“You don’t need to be a sailor or to know anything about boats to volunteer for the RNLI.

“We are looking for people in the Fleetwood area who have a little spare time, a lot of enthusiasm and a desire to help a vital lifesaving charity.

“People get involved with the RNLI for many different reasons.

“They may want to meet new people or learn new skills but whatever the reason, they will find the experience an extremely rewarding one and enjoy playing their part in helping to save lives at sea.”

Volunteer shore crew play an essential role at the Lifeboat station, helping to launch the lifeboat on a rescue call and making sure it is safely recovered and prepared for the next ‘shout’ once the rescue is complete.

The calls can come at any time of day or night and being part of the team means volunteers must be able to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and commit to an RNLI training programme.

Other volunteer roles with Fleetwood RNLI do not require 24/7 availability and are suitable for someone who may only have a couple of hours to spare each week.

The charity needs people to man its shop and help with fund-raising events and collections, as well as a visits support officer who will help arrange and conduct visits, delivering messages about water safety and the work of the RNLI.

> The Fleetwood RNLI Volunteer Recruitment event is on Sunday, between 10am-2pm, at Fleetwood Lifeboat Station, The Esplanade.

Members of the Lifeboat crew and RNLI fund-raising team will be there to talk to prospective volunteers and show them around the station.
