Police issue update after tram and Poulton woman, 72, collide in Cleveleys

A Poulton pensioner airlifted to hospital after colliding with a tram in Cleveleys suffered 'a number of serious head injuries', a police sergeant said.

Sgt Steve Hardman said his 'thoughts are with her at the time', and appealed for witnesses to yesterday's accident to call an officer.

"A number of people were in the area at the time ... and I believe several people will have seen what happened," he said.

Victoria Square was closed for over three hours after the crash, which happened in Rossall Road outside the HSBC bank at around 11.50am.

A medical helicopter landed at Jubilee Gardens after being called out alongside a rapid response car and ambulance. The first paramedic was on the scene in four minutes.

The woman, 72, who emergency services yesterday said suffered 'major trauma', was flown to Royal Preston Hospital, which specialises in treating head injuries.

Officers opened an investigation and were photographed examining the tram involved while the square was taped and coned off.

Sally Shaw from Blackpool Transport was unable to say how many passengers were on board, but said there were no reports of any other injuries.

She pledged a 'full investigation', with officials set to examine CCTV footage and the driver's logs.

"We are seeking to gather as much information as we can," she told The Gazette yesterday.

Motorists were told to avoid the road while it was shut, with trams terminating early in both directions.

The numbers one, three, and four bus services were also diverted amid diversions.
