Trams were terminating at Little Bispham, Blackpool Transport said, and the one, three, and four bus services were being diverted round the back of the bus station, via Nutter Road.

The road was re-opened at around 2pm.

Sally Shaw from Blackpool Transport was unable to say how many passengers were on the tram at the time of the crash, but said there were no reports of any other injuries.

She pledged a 'full investigation', with officials set to examine CCTV footage and the driver's logs.

"We are seeking to gather as much information as we can," she said.
