'Flashing lights' on the beach at Bispham sparks 999 call

A 999 caller mistook a bait digger on the beach at Bispham for somebody in need of emergency help.

The Coastguard was scrambled to reports of a 'flashing light' close to the water at around 4.50pm yesterday, and said the caller did the right thing.

They 'had seen the flashing lights and believed them to be a person in distress', the service said.

"We would rather have a false call with good intent than no call at all," a spokesman said.

"So if you see someone in distress or in danger at sea or along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
