"Anyone who was not able to complete their visit yesterday due to the fire is very welcome to return today for free entry."

Kate Shane from Merlin, which runs the Tower, said the Blackpool Tower Eye is set to open later today once electrical boards - damaged by water - are replaced.

She said seven tourists and five members of staff were kept at the top as a precaution yesterday.

The visitors included two couples from Scotland, who were given drinks and chocolate while they waited for the elevator shaft to be cleared of smoke.

"The building was handed back by the fire brigade this morning," Kate said.

"They are happy with the evacuation process and the way the team handled the situation, and I'm very proud of them as well."
