Bait digger and outfall pipe spark emergency call-outs on Fylde Coast

Vigilant beach goers first spotted a flock of seagulls and an object near to Cleveleys Beach at around 5.30pm on Sunday, March 18.

Crews from Fleetwood were called out to investigate and a lifeboat was launched but the teams quickly established that nobody was in difficulty.

Just before 7pm crews were called out again to reports that flashing lights were spotted near to North Pier.

Volunteers searched the coastline and found a bait digger who was "working hard to catch his worms."

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "These calls were made with good intent. We would always say to people to make that call to us if they are unsure.

"Just dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. We would always rather know about an incident. "
