Town hall workers in Blackpool could be set to disrupt services after indicating they are in favour of industrial action.
Around 1,800 members of Unison who work for Blackpool Council took part in a consultative ballot with 60 per cent of those who replied saying they wanted to take some form of action.
Union leaders will consider the response at meetings next week before deciding what to do next.
Staff are angry at being forced to accept an increments pay freeze, unpaid leave and car parking charges as part of measures by the council to save money.
The consultative ballot, which precedes a formal ballot for action, follows a protest earlier this month outside Blackpool Town Hall.
Sean Gibson, regional organiser for Unison, said: “The branch will meet with its members over the next week or so to see exactly where we take this.
“We are also conscious of the fact Unison nationally is looking to ballot members on whether to accept the one per cent pay rise offered by government.
“The issues in Blackpool are around the incremental pay freeze which is separate to the national offer.
“I think those who have voted are torn.
“They are mindful of the economic squeeze put on the council by central government, however there is growing unease with the fact that as part of the process to balance that shortfall, it means salaries are going to be hit.”
The council is proposing to axe around 700 jobs over the next two years as part of savings of £36m by 2016.
Staff are being asked to accept an increments pay freeze for the next two years which would save £1.3m and about 100 jobs.
Council leader Coun Simon Blackburn said: “While negotiations are ongoing, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.”
