Skateboard aces from Fleetwood and Wyre have a chance to demonstrate their skills in a competition next week.

The Skateboard Jam is the first in Wyre and takes place at the new Air Indoor Skatepark at YMCA Thornton Centre, on Victoria East, Thornton, on Sunday July 19, from 12.30 to 6.30pm.

The prize event will test boarders on a string of tricks and moves on different types of ramps and other features of the skatepark.

Ryan McNamara, Air’s coordinator said: “There aren’t enough of these type of events around here so I wanted people in Fleetwood and Thornton and Cleveleys to be given a chance.

“We’ll welcome people from further out as well.

“We’ve got some superb riders coming into the park.

“They love the design which means they can ride seamlessly from ramps onto pipes and create multiple tricks.”

Zak Barkhuizen, six, of Cleveleys, said: “Ryan’s taught me how to flip my board and now I’m trying other tricks.”

The bespoke ramp design inside Air was unveiled in April as one part of the first phase of Wyre Council’s £5.1m leisure redevelopment in the borough.

Leisure centres including Poulton and Garstang have all seen huge improvements and new facilities created, as part of the scheme.

Air features 17 interconnecting ramps for boards, BMX, blades and scooters and riders of all ages regularly take part.

Since opening it has hosted nearly 4,000 rider sessions. For more on the jam, visit, or call in at the centre (01253) 824108.
