Top dogs that are a mutt above the rest

Pooches large and small congregated at the netball courts on Stanley Park as 143 dogs competed in 20 different classes.

They included agility tests, fancy dress and accolades for the most handsome dog and the prettiest bitch.

A prize was also awarded for the Longview Dog of the Year - chosen from pets rehomed by the centre.

But the emphasis was firmly on fun and fundraising as the event raised at least £1,500 for the RSPCA.

Organiser Natasha Henderson, who works at the RSPCA’s Longview Animal Shelter in Stalmine, said; “It’s not like Crufts! Our competitors are all family dogs and they include some which have been rehomed through the RSPCA.

“It was a really good turnout and everybody had a great time.

“The furthest dog had come from Cumbria, and we had lots whose owners were just walking them in the park and decided to join in the fun.

“We were also raising awareness about microchipping and about our new home in Stalmine which has been open a year now.

“We have raised at least £1,500 for the RSPCA and there were also stalls representing other charities and hopefully they raised plenty of money as well.

“The fun dog show has been going for a few years now and we will be back again next year at the same time in August.”

Other charities and organisations which had stalls at the show included Lancaster-based Animal Care, Preston-based Cats in Crisis, German Shepherd Rescue, Dogs for the Disabled, Fylde Agility and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Around 20 dogs were microchipped by the RSPCA for free, and there was also a dog groomer at the show carrying out nail clipping.
