BLACKPOOL councillor and former rocker Tony Williams is no longer stuck in the middle – he’s at the top of Blackpool’s Tory group after taking over as leader.
The Anchorsholme ward councillor has taken over the reigns of the Blackpool Conservative group after being voted in by members at an annual general meeting.
He replaces Coun Peter Evans, who nominated his deputy leader for the position.
Coun Williams, who was the bass player in Stealers Wheel in the 1970s which hit fame with Stuck In The Middle With You, said: “Peter said he felt I would be more suitable for the job. He broke his leg at the beginning of the year and it knocked him sideways.
“He graciously agreed I was better positioned to do the job. I will dedicate 100 per cent of my time to this job.
“I have got the vision to take us forward. I think Blackpool has always been better run under Conservatives.
“I want to get the Conservative group in Blackpool more focused and focus on the real issues that face the people of Blackpool.
“We have got a lot of young people joining the group who have bright ideas.”
Coun Williams aims to focus on bringing more jobs to the resort and improving Blackpool’s image as family friendly.
He added: “We are spending more money on HMOs and transients
“I want to bring jobs to Blackpool and manufacturing. There needs to be stronger policing – while over all crime figures are dropping, violent crime is rising. We are becoming the murder and manslaughter capital of the UK.
“That is something we tried to control during our term of office. Having lap dancing and strip clubs are attracting the wrong sort. If we want it to be a family resort we have got to think about family appeal.”
