A TODDLER wandered near a busy road while his mother was drunk, a court was told.

Kelly Loughlin, 40, of Lewtas Street, North Shore, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to being drunk in charge of a child.

Susan Doran, prosecuting, told Blackpool Magistrates Court how, on September 28 at 7pm, police were alerted by a concerned passer by to an 18-month-old boy on Cocker Street. A woman was found lying on the ground nearby.

Police went to the scene and saw the toddler, who was on a sit-on toy, heading for the road which was busy with traffic.

Loughlin, who was drunk and staggering about, then grabbed the child by the hand and pulled him off the toy.

Steven Duffy, defending, said his client’s home had been burgled that morning and she was very upset. She was taking medication at the time and drank four cans of strong lager.

Loughlin was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs by Deputy District Judge Mike Fanning.
