The boy, reported to police as a two-year-old, suffered head injuries after colliding with a black Mercedes Vito van in Magdalen Road at around 5pm yesterday.

An air ambulance landed in a playing field off Fleetwood Road at 5.20pm, and later flew the youngster to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, police said.

He was conscious and breathing, while the van’s 53-year-old male driver was unharmed, a spokesman added.

The road was closed until 7.15pm while accident investigation work was carried out by officers.

A North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics arrived at 5.05pm – six minutes after being called.

She was unable to clarify the boy’s age, but confirmed he was airlifted to Alder Hey with head and arm injuries.

Several witnesses have already been spoken to, but anybody with information can still call police on 101, quoting log number 1090 of August 3.
