DARING displays of aerial acrobatics filled the Blackpool sky as the air annual show soared into town.

Jaw-dropping displays of flight were on display between Central and South Pier yesterday afternoon from world-famous exhibitors of skills and thrills in the cockpit.

The Red Arrows twisted and turned their way through the sky, grouping together to show off their eye-catching formations and adding extra colour to the mesmerising show with their red, white and blue smoke.

The unique stunts of the Breitling Wingwalkers – the world’s only formation team of their kind – had the crowd holding their breath as their tricky routine kept holidaymakers’ hearts in their mouths.

The Lancaster Bomber PA474, famous for its fearless missions over occupied Europe in World War Two, also joined the party, soaring low over the crowd to display its daunting but graceful presence.

As the planes returned to base to give the crowd a picturesque farewell over the Blackpool skyline, the crowd were left calling for an encore after their two-hour dose of magic.
