Road safety charity Brake is calling for motorists to “look out for each other” after its report uncovered the scale of the problem on the region’s roads.

Its figures, showing the number of fines handed out in 2013 for careless driving and speeding offences, reveal which areas have the most dangerous drivers.

Of the 4,132 fines issued to drivers on the Fylde coast, 951 were in the FY8 post code area, which covers Lytham and St Annes – the 10th worst area in the North West.

The FY2 area, covering Bispham, has the lowest number of penalty notices handed out at 312.

Julie Townsend, Brake’s deputy chief executive, said: “When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness.

“There are wider consequences if we don’t look out for each other on roads – people afraid to walk and cycle or let their children walk and
cycle, and unable to get out and enjoy their community and live active lifestyles.

“That’s why, instead of making our streets stressful, risky places, we’re asking all road users to look out for and protect each other.”

The vast majority of the fines were for speeding,
although a handful were for careless driving – a new fixed penalty introduced in August 2013. The FY3 area – covering Layton, Normoss and Staining – had the most careless driving fines on the Fylde coast with 14.

Department for Transport figures show 1,232 people were injured on Fylde coast roads in 2013.

That includes 194 people who were killed or seriously injured – 73 each in Blackpool and Wyre, with 48 in Fylde.
