There's been a plea for calm as the young farmers head back to Blackpool

The gathering has been overshadowed by petty crime in recent years, with a child’s bike being stolen from the town centre and one reveller jumping on an ambulance vehicle just yards away from the town hall in 2016 (inset).

Now, with the convention returning to the resort after being held in Torquay last year, the opposition leader at the council, Tony Williams, said he hopes the farmers will do themselves proud by being on their best behaviour on what is set to be a warm weekend.

He said: “Financially, it’s a good boost for the town, and the majority of these people do behave themselves, but one or two have rocked the boat for the rest of them.

“I hope they are on their best behaviour this weekend, and they take into consideration families who are also visiting.”

BBC Radio One DJs Scott Mills and Chris Stark are set to perform for around 5,000 young farmers dressed in glow-in-the-dark outfits at the Winter Gardens on Saturday night, while English rugby union player James Haskell will DJ on Sunday night.

Katie Hall from the convention’s organiser, the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs, said: “Scott and Chris have consistently been rated highly by YFC members in our post-Convention surveys – they always deliver a great set and have fun with the crowd.”

Forecasters expect this weekend to remain dry, with temperatures of up to 20 degrees Celcius expected on Monday. The Met Office said: “Cloudy starts will give way to warm, sunny spells for many.

“It will become very warm for some, however along the coast it will be cooler.”
