NOTHING was quite as it seemed as the annual Showzam! Carnival Ball sprinkled some saucy magic over Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
The popular cabaret festival was launched at the Winter Gardens on Friday, with just some of the acts set to entertain the resort over the coming week going on show.
And on Saturday night, the Ballroom was overtaken by giant acrobatic insects, jive dancing pensioners, whip-cracking cowboys, men in make-up and sizzling showgirls.
The historic dance floor was an awe inspiring sight.
Guests of all ages dug out their most outrageous outfits for the burlesque-themed extravaganza.
Despite the icy night, party-goers were encased in little but corsetry and fishnets, and feathers were a common theme. Victorian gentlemen, military officers and drag queens stood shoulder to shoulder as they enjoyed a night of sparkling Showzam! variety.
Larger-than-life compere Madame Galina led a weird and wonderful show with striptease, hand balancing, magic, hula hoop with music from a live jazz band.
The dance floor remained a hive of activity right until the lights came up.
And it was a welcome sight to Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Showzam curator.
She said: “I was thrilled to see the Ballroom at capacity for the carnival ball, it shows how much the event has grown.
“People have travelled from all over the county to be here which is great for Blackpool.”
Showzam! events are taking place across the resort throughout the week and will be featured in The Gazette.
