FROM school singing sensation to TV starlet – one Blackpool girl wowed the small screen’s harshest critics to prove she’s got the X Factor.
And Emma Wright stormed through to the talent show’s boot camp stages in style, with four resounding “yes” votes from the hit show’s new-look judging panel.
The 19-year-old, from Marton, performed Christina Aguilera’s “Ain’t No Other Man” for Gary Barlow, Louis Walsh, Tulisa and Kelly Rowland – the same song that won her the coveted Pop Wannabe crown at Blackpool Sixth Form College last year.
Emma, whose first taste of fame came as part of Sunday night’s show, said: “I’ve always watched it at home but I decided this year I needed to do something about it.
“There are three audition rounds because you audition for the producers first so it’s quite a long process but it was exciting and really nerve-wracking. By the time I got in front of the judges I’d been waiting about 13 hours, so you can imagine the nerves built up.
“Gary Barlow said I was amazing and that I definitely had a place on X Factor and Louis Walsh said I was amazing, and they said I sounded like Christina Aguilera so that was quite a compliment.”
Emma is currently working as a singer in Blackpool’s pubs and hotels, as well as part-time in Clarks on the town’s Clifton Retail Park.
But she hopes to make it as a pop star after making it through to boot camp – and viewers will be able to see how she got on when the scenes are screened later this month.
She added: “Boot camp was crazy, it’s in a big mansion and we had a big party. It was a good experience but there’s a lot of waiting around.”
Ian Carten, Blackpool Sixth Form’s Head of Performing Arts and Music, said: “Emma is a genuine pop star in the making who first and foremost has an exceptional voice. Having taught her for two years, I was very proud to see her showcasing her talent on a national stage.”
Last year Blackpool’s Aidan Grimshaw made it all the way through to the live shows on the ITV programme.
