A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "We were called to a report of a person in the sea clinging to stanchion at the sea defences.

"Thankfully two lifeguards who were at the scene managed to escort him out of the water to safety.

"He was then passed to the care of the paramedics.

"It's not known how he came to be there, but it is thought he was cut off by the tide."

The Ambulance Services confirmed they took a teenager to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

He is not believed to have been seriously injured.
