Teeing up for bagsful of colour

Can you help bring a splash of colour to Fylde when a major international tournament comes to town later this year?

Officials of St Annes In Bloom are appealing for worn-out golf bags so they can be planted with floral displays to greets the hundreds of players and officials who will flock to the Royal Lytham and St Annes course in early August for the Rich Women’s British Open tournament.

The intention is for the golf bags, once modified to include planting pockets, to be planted up with red and white-based floral arrangements and line the route from St Annes railway station to the course.

Co-ordinator Tony Ford said: “We are hoping that people may have old golf bags lurking in sheds, garages and attics and this is an opportunity to have a clear out and support our project at the same time.

“We have collected about 20 bags so far, some taken out of the waste stream, others donated by local residents and some provided by the local golf clubs.

“We have even managed to obtain a couple of bags from the local charity shops.

“It’s a great example of re-use and recycle which we hope will earn us some additional marks the next time the North West In Bloom judges pay us a visit.”

In Bloom chairman Fiona Boismaison added: “This is an exciting project for us.

“Already several schools have expressed a willingness to get involved and we are hoping our displays will offer a colourful welcome to St Annes for this prestigious event.”
