BUSINESSMEN sick of charting a course through the rocks and reefs of a sinking economy can take a break – and steer a course on the real choppy waters off the Fylde coast.

Andy Dobson has got the wind in his sails with his business Atlas Sailing which offers team bonding events to companies and individuals from across the north of England.

Andy and his business partner Graham Zirfas run the yacht Atlas from Fleetwood Marina offering everything from a four hour introduction to sailing for a party to long distance trips to The Isle of Man, Ireland and even the Saronic Gulf in the Mediterranean.

Andy said everyone gets to have as much of a go at sailing as they want and they are treated to some gourmet food from Graham who has a background in the hospitality business.

Andy said: “What really inspired me to set up Atlas Sailing was the huge variety of challenges that sailing has to offer in any one voyage, which makes it perfect for the business market.

“Sailing is a very natural team-building activity; you have to work together well, communicate clearly and have clear roles and responsibilities simply to make the yacht move!

“Businesses today are always looking for new and interesting ways to engage with clients and their team and spending a day on the open sea, learning how to navigate and sail the yacht, is a great way to bring people together in a unique setting.

“We also custom make trips with gourmet cuisine prepared by our on board chef and varying itineraries from one day to one week or longer.”

He said business was steady as she goes with companies from Manchester, Liverpool and Yorkshire coming to Fleetwood for the sailing experience. Atlas has also teamed up with the Fleetwood Nautical College to offer a Sea Survival experience in their indoor training pool, for intrepid souls who fancy an adrenaline pumping time simulating what its like to abandon ship and take to the life raft or escape from a sinking helicopter!

Andy said: “Its the sort of thing Prince William did at Fleetwood when he was training there with the RAF.

“Everyone gets the appropriate training with us for whichever package they choose and it’s great fun and a unique experience. We are also bringing in companies and organisations from outside the Fylde to spend time and money in our area.”
