A TAXI driver was dragged from his car by two thugs who punched him in the face in a suspected road rage attack.
The cabbie, who is believed to be in his 60s, is being treated in hospital for horrific facial injuries, including a broken jaw, following the shocking assault.
The driver, who works for Whiteside Taxis in St Annes, had stopped to pick up passengers from a property on Headroomgate Road in the town at around 11am on Monday when two men pounced on him.
They had got out of a car behind the taxi and dragged the driver out of the cab. The victim was punched in the face before the two men got back into their car and drove off.
The taxi driver, who works for Whiteside Taxis, was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital suffering from a broken jaw and a gash to his head.
It is thought he underwent an operation to reconstruct his jaw yesterday.
Police have now made two arrests in connection with the assault.
A 21-year-old man from Preston was arrested on suspicion of Section 20 wounding, causing grievous bodily harm on Monday evening. A 20-year-old man from Lytham was arrested on suspicion of the same offence yesterday morning.
John Whiteside, owner of Whiteside Taxis, said support was being offered to the victim.
He added: “This is a very rare occurrence and it is even more unusual it should happen in broad daylight. We have no explanation as to why this has happened but it has shock to the whole company.
“We are in touch with the driver and his company and are here to offer any support which is needed.”
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “We got a call to Headroomgate Road, near the mini-rounabout, at 11.30am on Monday morning. We are trying to establish what has happened. It looks like he’s been punched. He has suffered a broken jaw.
“If anyone saw anything or has information about the incident, please contact the police.”
A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We were called to near a mini-roundabout on Headroomgate Road in St Annes by the police who said a man had been assaulted. He was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.”
