Take part in annual bird count for RSPB

The countdown has commenced for the world’s biggest garden wildlife survey – and more people in Lancashire than ever before are being called upon to take part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch on January 24-25.

Now in its 36th year, the event is easy to join in. Simply count the birds in your garden or local park for one hour over Big Garden Birdwatch weekend, and tell the RSPB what you see.

And for the second time in the event’s history, participants are also being asked to log some of the other wildlife which snuffles and settles in their gardens and local parks, and this year there are two new additions to the survey list – slow worms and grass snakes.

To help prepare for the Big Garden Birdwatch, there are plenty of events taking place in Lancashire throughout January. In the build-up to the Big Garden Birdwatch weekend, join the team at RSPB Leighton Moss to pick up of tips on how to tell our feathered friends apart.

‘What’s that garden bird’ drop-in sessions will be held on Saturday and Sunday January 17 and 18, from 10am to noon, with ‘Fat cake sculpture’ workshops following from 1-4pm.

Both sessions are free, but normal admission charges to the reserve apply to non-members. For more information, email [email protected] or call 01524 701601.

Or head to the RSPB’s Ribble Discovery Centre, at Fairhaven Lake, and find out all you need to know about taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch at a free family event on Sunday, January 18, between 1-3 pm.
