THIS mum has been cooking up a real storm.
Not only has her shop, Little House of Cupcakes, in Thornton, scooped a top title in the National Cupcake Week competition, the shop is down to the final three in the food category of The Telegraph Best Shops Competition. Customers voted in their hundreds to help the Fleetwood Road North shop, run by Katie Rawcliffe, get on the shortlist.
Katie, 27, will go to a glittering awards ceremony at Altitude 360 in London, next month, when the winners will be announced.
The Telegraph Magazine Shop Awards aim to focus solely on the small local retailers which make high streets special.
TV’s queen of shops Mary Portas, who is judging the awards and launched the competition, said: “Independent shops are part of our heritage. If we want to prevent our high streets from turning into bland, identikit versions of each other, or dying off entirely, then we have to rally around our little independents, who are fighting not only for your custom but for their very lives.”
Katie started the business when her son Max, now four, was born and she needed to fit work around childcare.
She said: “It’s really exciting to be through to the last three in the competition. We’re confident about our product, we strive for excellent customer service and are blessed to have a loyal customer base. If we were to win, it would mean so much. It’s been hard work because when I just started, I was doing it at home but the business grew and grew.
“And it’s nice to know as a small firm from Thornton, up against much larger companies from places like London, we can still do well and put this area on the map.”
