Surfers' call to aid Blackpool beach clean

Surfers Against Sewage and local residents take part in a beach clean-up in Blackpool

And the group is asking for help from the public to spring clean the strand before the season starts.

Blackpool Light Craft Club, is taking part in Surfers Against Sewage’s Big Spring Beach Clean on Sunday, April 9 along the beach and dunes at South Shore.

They have support from the Friends of the Estuary Coastal Care Group, Layton Juniors football members and the Love My Beach group.

Gary Lovatt, the BLCC’s Water-Sports Captain and a member of Surfers Against Sewage, said: “After every high tide there is usually a lot of things washed up on the beach at South Shore and after the winter storms.

“In summer people visiting the beaches leave a lot of litter, you find barbecues left in the dunes, so it is good to get out there and clean it up.

“It is such an important stretch of Blackpool’s beaches.

“We have kite surfers and kayaks, jet skiers and people launch light craft from there.

“We are hoping for between 15 and 30 people but would welcome members of the public to help us out.

“We have litter pickers and gloves and the use of the club’s tractor.

He said they would be walking along the beach and piling the rubbish on the strand line for the club’s tractor to collect.

“If anyone is coming along dress for the weather. We will meet at the club at 10 am and walk down towards St Annes for about an hour.

“There will be refreshments afterwards.”

Gary said he had been a member of Surfers Against Sewage for more than six years on and off and said they were formed to campaign for cleaner beaches and water off the UK’s coasts.

He added: “Our aim is to reduce marine litter.”
