What was a miserable start to the day turned a corner at the right time for hundreds of runners taking part in the annual Leg it for the Lifeboats race.

Now in its fifth year, the 3.5-mile race saw more than 200 runners raise more than £1,500 for the Lytham St Annes Lifeboat Station.

David Forshaw, from the lifeboat station, said: “We get no government money so we have to raise money and the race is one way we do that throughout the year.

“The weather was absolutely lousy to start with but two or three minutes before the start it started to clear up and improved throughout the afternoon.”

The race, from Lytham lifeboat house to St Annes lifeboat house, culminated in a barbecue at the St Annes’ cafe for runners to enjoy a well-earned brew.

“We’re very grateful for the participation and donations. They help us save lives so it’s great to see,” added David.

A pre-race warm-up took place in a marquee on Lytham Green thanks to the St George’s Day Charity Festival organisers, who allowed
runners to shelter from the harsh elements and avoid seizing up.

David said: “It was pouring down at the time so it was very appreciated!”
