FIRE crews were drafted in to stop part of the roof from blowing off a town centre restaurant as storms battered the Fylde coast.

Sixteen firefighters spent two hours trying to secure the fibreglass section of roof at West Coast Rock Cafe, Abingdon Street, Blackpool, from 6.30pm.

Police closed the road during the repair operation, which saw the roof secured with rope as gusts of up to 40mph hit the resort.

Watch manager Ian Alder, from Blackpool fire station, said: “The wind had got underneath the roof and blew it up, folding it in half.

“It was very dangerous and particularly difficult for us up there as the snow was battering us and the wind was really severe.

“It was a difficult job.”

The street was reopened to pedestrians at 8.30pm and the venue remained open.

Watch manager Alder said the fire service would keep in touch with Blackpool Council over the weekend to make sure the building remained safe.
