A former Paralympic athlete was the guest of honour at the grand opening of a school’s new playground.
Silver and bronze medalist Shelly Woods, from Layton, made a special appearance at Carleton Green Community Primary School yesterday.
Children celebrated the grand opening of a new playground.
Headteacher Susan McGrath said: “She came to represent the fact that you can overcome difficulties by being physically active. That was the message we wanted to give to the children.
“We have shown the children videos of her successes and the journey that she has gone through so they all knew what she had done. They are only four and five-years-old, but they had so many questions.
“They have been so excited. The work that they have carried out in class has been phenomenal.”
Shelly said: “It was a pleasure to open the new play area at school. It’s great to see the children enjoying the outdoors and participating in exercise and physical activity at school. The new play area looks a lot of fun.”
