As part of Independent Retailers Month, which highlights the important role smaller retailers play in the community, Garstang Independent Traders are championing ‘a premium shopping offer’ among shops and boutiques in the area.

Independent retailers will offer discounts on a variety of goods, including fashion, fancy goods, foodstuffs, books, home, gift, glassware, as an incentive to support the local economy.

Naomi Walker, vice chairman of Independent Garstang traders and owner of Bombshell Betty Boutique, said: “A lot of people just don’t realise how valuable their custom is to their local, independent businesses. They are the life-blood of our town.

“They add social and commercial value to the places we work, live and enjoy and it really is a case of ‘use it or lose it.”

Research shows that for every £1 spent with a local, independent business, between 50p and 70p circulates back into that local economy.

“We want residents to remember that small local businesses don’t just sell you things.

“The charity donation, raffle prize or gift voucher that your child’s school, church or fund-raising activity benefited from has been donated by local businesses.

“Add on events such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Paint the Town Orange and the Christmas festival, and you begin to see just how important local independent retailers are to the lifeblood of Garstang.”
