A son slapped his mother’s boyfriend round the face after words were exchanged at a 70th birthday celebration.

Benjamin Smith, of Dickson Road, central Blackpool, pleaded guilty to assault.

The 23-year-old was sentenced to a 12 months community order with up to 30 days rehabilitation to be supervised by the probation service and ordered to pay a £150 court charge with £50 costs plus £60 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Pam Smith, prosecutor, said Smith, his mother and her partner were at Freddy’s Bar, on Dickson Road on August 10 when the incident occurred.

Smith returned to the table and picked up the wrong glass.

The court heard his mother’s partner then told him it was the wrong glass but Smith became abusive lashed out and slapped him across the face.

He told police he had drunk five pints of lager previously.

Suzanne Mugford, defending, said Smith, who was very protective of his mother, suffered from learning difficulties.

The mother’s partner did not have any lasting injuries from the incident.
