SLIDESHOW: To the lighthouse for spectacular heritage open day

Museums, churches and even a lighthouse were giving people the chance to take a look around as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days weekend.

In St Annes, there was the chance at the Town Hall to look behind doors that are normally locked to members of the public.

The Lytham St Annes Civic Society organised the behind the scenes tour, which also included a close-up look at some of the works of art on display in the building.

Margaret Race, chairman of the Friends of Lytham St Annes Art Collection, was on hand to help answers questions about the extensive array of paintings and statues.

She said: “It was a very lively day. An enormous number of people now know about the collection.

“I personally have campaigned all my life for these treasures to come out of the Town Hall and be seen by the public.

“More people know about them now so the opportunity to come to the Town Hall and see more of them is great.”

It was the second time the Town Hall has been part of the Heritage Open Days weekend, which takes place each year.

In Fleetwood, more than a thousands people also flocked to take part in the event - with venues such as the Mount Pavilion and Beach Lighthouse opening their doors over the course of the weekend.

Margaret Daniels, from the Fleetwood Civic Society, said: “It shows the history and the heritage of the town, and not a lot of people realise how much heritage and good buildings there are in Fleetwood.

“People have been taking up the opportunity to come inside and we’ve had a lot of local people saying they used to come in as a child.”
