Princes Way, in Anchorsholme, has already been closed as waves are expected to come over the sea defences, making the coastal area dangerous.

A combination of strong winds, reaching up to 70mph, and high tide at around midday are expected to cause problems along the coast and a series of flood warnings are in place.

The Environment Agency has issued the warnings – where flooding is imminent and immediate action required – in Blackpool and various points on the Wyre estuary.

The lower level flood alerts, which warn people to be prepared, are in force across the rest of the Fylde coast and much of the North West.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “We had no major incidents overnight and it’s a case of preparation. Midday is supposed to be the biggest risk.

“We are liaising with all the councils to make sure everything is in place.

“We have closed Princes Way, at Anchorsholme, where there is a big risk of people going out looking at the sea.”

Fire crews and the coastguard are also on standby and expect to be busy at high tide.

High tide in Blackpool will be at 12.05pm, when it will reach a depth of 9.6m. In Fleetwood, the sea will reach 10.3m at 12.15pm.

Winds are already picking up, with a Met Office yellow warning in place since midnight, and gusts at Rossall Point topped 50mph at around 3am.
