Some shops in Blackpool’s town centre were forced to shut for six hours today after worries about falling debris.
Police closed Bank Hey Street from 11am to 5pm after winds of more than 50mph battered the Fylde coast.
Music store HMV Blackpool was among those shops forced to shut following the extreme weather.
Store manager Neil Carpenter said: “There was some issue with debris close to the Tower and while it was resolved we were forced to close.
“I do not know the exact details – I think officers were concerned debris could blow off and injure people.
“Some shops like Boots and Primark were not affected as they have separate entrances, but we had to close.
“It has not been an ideal day. It can be a bit of a wind tunnel down there.”
