A serial thief who had used heroin for 34 years has been jailed.

Kevin McGowan, 48, of Caunce Street, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to one offence of theft and denied another, but was found guilty after a trial.

At the time of the offences he was on two suspended prison sentences imposed for a total of 11 offences of theft.

McGowan was sentenced to 42 days jail by Blackpool magistrates. Pam Smith, prosecuting, said McGowan stole £39 of goods from the resort’s B&M Bargains store on August 14.

Then, on September 17, he took 11 packets of ham, valued at £22, from Blackpool’s One Stop Shop and hid them down his trousers.

Howard Green, defending, told the court his client was no longer using heroin.
