School wins award for garden project

Staff and pupils at Weeton Primary School are celebrating after winning a prize in the Better Energy School Awards.

Their entry ‘From A Seed So Small To Dinner For Us All’ was highly commended in the ‘Totally Active’ Award category for schools in northern England.

The Better Energy School Awards is a nationwide competition for five to 11 year-olds, which is run by the Young People’s Trust for the Environment (YPTE) in partnership with Total.

Weeton Primary School’s project set out with an ambitious aim – to establish a school garden area, grow vegetables and fruit from seed, harvest them, then cook and eat them outdoors on an open fire.

The school has received a prize of £100 for the school funds.

YPTE’s Director, Peter Littlewood said, “This is a fantastic concept and has been a huge success. The children clearly love working in their garden area and with the raised beds, tyre planters and bug hotel, it’s not surprising that they enjoy it so much.”

With over 50 prizes on offer to schools and a total prize fund of £20,000, the Better Energy School Awards competition will run again in 2018-19. For
