BLACKPOOL’S labour leader has come under fire from the Tories over his travel expenses.
Figures show between April 1 2009 and March 31 2010, Coun Simon Blackburn claimed £1,535.18 of which £1,147.44 was connected with attending meetings for the Local Government Association (LGA).
When challenged at the council’s budget meeting on the extent of his claims, Coun Blackburn said the council could reclaim the cash from the LGA – but that has subsequently emerged not to be the case.
Coun Blackburn said: “When I was first appointed to the LGA scrutiny panel I was left under the impression we could claim travel expenses back from them.
“A subsequent check has shown we can’t.
“Nevertheless I maintain Blackpool having a voice on the LGA for three years was a good thing.”
Coun Blackburn is no longer a member of the panel which has since been abolished.
