It’s that time of the year again!
The Swallowdale Community Giveaway is looking for the Fylde coast’s most deserving young people to benefit from a £10,000 grant.
The grant is open to people under the age of 25, as well as youth groups, schools, nurseries and children’s sports groups.
Last year, Staining Primary School received a grant of £1,500 to buy ‘story sacks’, which contained children’s books, toys, and props relating to non-fiction books and games, and reading tips, for its reception class. The sacks cost between £70 -80 each.
Dawn Hayward, learning mentor at Staining Primary School, in Staining Road, said: “The quality is amazing, and I was able to buy 18 to 20 with the money, to use with our reception children and their parents.
“It was very, very successful. It has widened their reading knowledge. It’s switched some children onto wanting to read. Parents are able to get involved. It’s widening the reading experience.”
Fylde Sharks, a swimming club based in St Annes and Kirkham for children and young people with disabilities, received £800 to train four young people to become swimming teachers.
Committee member Paul Cooper said: “It’s a double-edged sword. Not only are we training children to be swimming teachers, which is something they carry for the rest of their lives, they also go on to teach the disabled children.
“We have 60 disabled children we teach to swim in Kirkham and St Annes every fortnight.”
Thornton boy Tyler Wraith Kenyon, eight, received £5k from Swallowdale to go towards renovating his home to accommodate his cerebral palsy. Mum Tori said: “I took it very emotionally. We were all blown away.”
Swallowdale Children’s Trust has, for more than 100 years, provided help to disadvantaged children living in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
Since The Gazette first teamed up with Swallowdale to give away cash to help children and young people on the Fylde coast, a massive £80,000 has been handed out.
Last year alone, the sums given away added up to £25,000.
And the good news doesn’t stop there.
There will be more money to give away this year as we team up again for a sixth year.
Keep an eye out for details of this year’s giveaway, which will be announced in the coming days.
More information will be revealed soon for anyone hoping to apply to the scheme this time around.
