Officials of sewer company United Utilities had initially thought that a sewer collapse in Cavendish Road would be repaired by the end of last week.

But the road was still closed this week and John Martin from United Utilities said: “We’re really sorry this repair work is taking much longer. We’ve been faced with a number of unforeseen difficulties repairing the damaged pipe.

“We are doing everything possible to get the repair complete and the road back open.

“We completely understand the impact this road closure is having on people getting on with their daily routine.”

The sewer collapse is the latest of a number over the last 18 months in St Annes, some on main through roads.
