Road chaos looms ahead of great British getaway

Traffic chaos is set to descend on Lancashire as millions head off on holidays as schools start to break up for summer.

With Scotland’s schools already broken up and England and Wales following suit this week, roads around the county are set to be choc-a-bloc.

And the weather might also make it tough for drivers this week with British motoring association, the AA, claiming temperatures could reach such heights as to melt the tarmac. AA’s Max Holdstock, says drivers should check their tyres before making long journeys due to the hot weather.

Combine this with parts of the M6 being closed for 10 days and it could be slow and sticky start to your summer holiday.

Highways England is advising drivers who use the northbound M6 out of Lancaster that the entry slip road will be closed around the clock, as part of Lancashire County Council’s £124m Heysham Link project.

The weekend is set to be the busiest for several years with 14.4m people setting off on their travels this from Thursday to Sunday. And

But the Met Office is predicting a mixed bag of weather conditions for the rest of the week, something amateur Chorley forecaster Stuart Markham agrees with.

He said: “It’s going to be a lot cooler than we’ve had on Monday and Tuesday. From now until next week it’ll be a mixture of sunshine and showers with nothing compared to the high temperatures of Tuesday for at least two weeks, if again this summer.”

“Saturday will be the warmest day, getting as hot as 23 degrees,” Stuart said.
