Motorists are advised to avoid the area and there are reports the delays are having a knock-on effect for traffic using junction 3 of the M55 motorway.

Police reported just after 8.30am that one lane of the road has now re-opened.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue said one person had to be freed from their vehicle.

A spokesman added: “Three other casualties were already out of their vehicles before firefighters got there.”
