CALLS have been made to build a showcase estate after plans to demolish Blackpool’s high rises were backed emphatically for the second time.
Nearly half the respondents to a survey by the Queens Park Residents Association said they wanted to see the tower blocks bulldozed.
It follows on from official consultation by the council which also resulted in total demolition being the most popular choice.
Now residents are being urged to get involved in the design process to create a £30m new development on the land.
Chairman of the Queens Park Residents Association Gwen King said: “What we have to get away from is having all the usual red brick or grey brick council housing.
“There are some really funky, modern designs around and we want to look at some of those and create something really aspirational.
“We have one opportunity to do this, so we have to get it right.
“We would like to see a showcase estate built on Queens Park which is seen as leading the way, and an example for other towns to follow.”
She added that while she wanted to see more family homes built, it also had to be a priority to ensure existing residents could return to the estate after around three fifths of respondents said they wanted to continue living there.
