A major search was launched in Blackpool in the early hours of this morning, following reports a woman was threatening to enter the sea, officials said.

RNLI volunteers manning the resort's two lifeboats scoured the water between Central Pier and the mirrorball in South Shore, while Coastguard rescuers and police officers searched the Promenade at around 1.30am.

"After an extensive search, the casualty was found safe and well elsewhere," the RNLI said.

A 19-year-old man was 'escorted to safety' after being seen in the sea opposite Blackpool Tower in the early hours of yesterday morning.
