Recruiting drive for elite force

Some 30 members of the elite force, from bases across the UK, will be in the town to meet the public on Tuesday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 15.

The prestigious visit will also see 1,400 young people visiting the town for the event over the two days.

The Marines and the young people have been invited by Wyre’s Armed Forces Champion Terry Rogers (inset) to enable students to find out more about their work and how to join.

The town’s military guests will be set up besides the Model Yacht Lake each day, between 9am and 3pm, where they will oversee climbing frame sessions, lazer weapon activities and water-based Alpha craft events.

Travelling in from across Lancashire over the two day, the students will meet up at Fleetwood Sea Cadet Base before going to the lake.

It will be the second time the Marines have held the event, which has proved a huge success two years ago.

Although the event is aimed at the young people, members of the public will be able go along and watch the activities.

Coun Rogers said: “This is a chance for young people to meet them and especially for young people and students to find out more about joining the Royal Marines.”

A Royal Marines helicopter will also be in attendance, after initial fears it wouldn’t be able to land on Wyre Council land.

But Wyre said there would be no problem providing the Marines met certain criteria set by the Civil Aviation Authority, which has now been addressed.
