Raise a glass to the £65k whisky

For the bottle was sold online by a Blackpool-based auctioneer for an eye-watering £65,210.

It is the highest price ever achieved at an online whisky auction in the UK.

The new owner of the rare Macallan, which was distilled in Speyside in Scotland, is set to travel from Taiwan to personally collect their purchase from Blackpool-based company Whisky Online.

The family business was founded by Wayne and Debbie Ormerod, who now run it with their son Harrison.

They source rare whiskies and sell them online for a five per cent commission charge, as well as selling their own products.

Harrison said: “A lot of people have inherited whiskies or have collections which they want to sell.

“But it is also becoming a popular investment and currently it is the third best commodity in the world. If you buy whisky, it will never go down in value. At a recent exhibition we took two bottles of whisky, together worth £20,000 and we had customers who travelled from as far as the Far East just to taste it.”

With 25 years experience behind it, the firm has a reputation for its knowledge of unusual whiskies.

The Macallan which sold for £65,000 cost £3,000 when it was released in 2006. Its value is enhanced by it being presented in a hand blown Lalique glass decanter.

But what should you buy now if you want to invest your money in whisky rather than stocks and shares?

Harrison said: “At the moment we are recommending people to buy Glendronach.

“The whiskies are readily available and are selling at reasonable prices. A 30-year-old Glendronach can be bought for £500 to £600 at the moment, while a Macallan would be £2,000. The distilleries both specialise in sherry casks which are difficult to get hold of now.”

Another bottle of Macallan which was bought for £50 in 1983, was sold by the firm for £25,100 at auction.
