POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an Italian rail passenger was subjected to a torrent of racist abuse.

The victim, a 59-year-old man from Blackpool, was on board the Preston to Blackpool North rail service when the man began hurling abuse at him after getting on the train at Kirkham and Wesham, in the company of woman and a child.

British Transport Police officers are now asking the public to help trace the offender following the incident around 9.20pm on July 15.

PC Chris Dursley said: “The offender seemed to believe the passenger was of Asian descent and subjected him to prolonged abuse.

“The offender is described as being white, about 5ft 9in tall and was about 35 to 40-years-old. He had dark and grey hair and was wearing a striped top and grey trousers. He was travelling with a blonde woman – aged about 30-years-old – and a young boy with red hair.”

Call British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or call Crimestoppers, on 0800 555111.
