Pupils have an ice time during half-term treat

We all remember PE lessons with cold gym floors, miserable attempts to climb ropes, and forgetting our football socks.

But Northfold Primary School in Thornton has come up with a more novel way of getting youngsters to keep fit.

Every half-term, pupils are treated to a different sport, and have already tried their hand at archery, fencing, tag rugby, and even Bollywood dancing.

Year Five teacher Lucy Avis has been taking her class ice skating at Fylde Coast Ice Arena in Bristol Avenue, Bispham, in recent weeks.

She said: “They have done so well. I’m really pleased with how they have overcome their fears.

“They all went on with ice skating aids in the first week but by the end even the children who didn’t want to go on initially were confident skaters.

“They have done better than I have!”

She added: “At the moment what we are really trying to do at the school is try lots of different activities that are fun but also keep them healthy.

“We hope to attract the children to sports in the hope they will carry on themselves.”
