£740,000 A585 roadworks to cause traffic misery

Construction staff are working along the A585, from the Skippool roundabout to Singleton, as part of a £740,000 scheme aimed at improving flooding defences and bolstering safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

The roadworks will last around the clock until a week before Christmas.

The drainage system along the route, which encompasses a section of Breck Road and Mains Lane, is being completely overhauled with cleaning and repairs to reduce flooding.

New footpaths are also being provided on both sides of the road.

The route will remain open in both directions through narrowed lanes until the Illuminations finish on November 8, when temporary traffic lights will be used between 7pm and 6am while one carriageway will be closed.

Highways England project manager Peter Gee said: “We’re working hard to ensure we minimise disruption by keeping the road fully open during the day, doing any noisy works before 11pm at night and keeping one of the footpaths open at all times.”

Coun Maxine Chew, who lives in Mains Lane and represents Singleton, said: “I’m dreading the traffic lights because whenever they put them up there are huge hold ups.

“I don’t doubt for a minute if it was during the day there would be queues back to the motorway and Fleetwood.

“But we will have to put up with it because this road is so heavily used it wears quickly and needs constant repair.”
